Un viaggio nel barbaricum - Ep. 14, speciale (1)

Nello scorso episodio abbiamo posto fine alla dura vita dell'inflessibile Valentiniano I, imperatore-soldato dal carattere collerico e poco diplomatico, morto durante una epica sfuriata. Abbiamo assistito alla formale transizione di potere verso i suoi figli Graziano e Valentiniano II, mentre l'eminenza grigia dietro ai troni pare essere Merobaude, lo shogun dell'Impero d'Occidente che ha messo fine anche alla carriera del Conte Teodosio.

In questo episodio faremo un percorso diverso dal solito e torneremo indietro, molto indietro. Di solito raccontiamo in questi episodi la storia scritta dei popoli del mediterraneo. Nel quarto secolo Romani, Greci e gli altri popoli sedentari del bacino del mediterraneo avevano raggiunto da un millennio il livello di civiltà associato con la cultura scritta. Abbiamo quindi ampio materiale su cui basarci per scrivere la loro storia: prima fra tutti l'ampio corpus scritto dalle fonti primarie dell'antichità, unito alla vasta produzione epigrafica che ci ha restituito l'archeologia. Ci piacerebbe spesso saperne di più – basti pensare alla confusione che circonda la crisi del terzo secolo – ma il materiale che abbiamo a disposizione pare colossale in confronto con quello che gli storici possono utilizzare per ricostruire la storia dei popoli germanici.

Eppure siamo arrivati al tempo in cui questi popoli – e i Goti in particolare – giocheranno un ruolo cruciale nella nostra storia. Non più quello di comparse e carne da macello delle legioni Romane ma attori politici di primissimo piano. Abbiamo già visto singoli barbari fare carriera nell'impero, spesso spettacolare come quella di Merobaude, de facto plenipotenziario dell'occidente. Molti hanno letto in questa “barbarizzazione” dei vertici e delle truppe dell'impero come un sintomo di debolezza quando invece lo considero uno di forza di Roma: il melting pot imperiale funzionava ancora a meraviglia e la prospettiva di immigrare nell'Impero era molto allettante per i giovani Germani, sia tra la gente comune che tra i rampolli delle grandi famiglie: ho postato qualche giorno fa l'immagine di una iscrizione in latino che celebra il servizio di un principe burgundo alla corte di Valentiniano I, in latino, simbolo dell'integrazione raggiunta dai nuovi arrivati. Questi Germani finivano spesso per far carriera nell'esercito romano: alla fine divenivano spesso romani loro stessi o almeno lo divenivano i loro figli. Non si sognavano minimamente di indebolire o perfino distruggere l'Impero dove avevano scelto di vivere e che consideravano spesso come la propria patria.

In questo episodio vedremo come il mondo dei Germani fu rivoluzionato dal contatto con le più avanzate civiltà del mondo mediterraneo. Poi ripercorreremo la storia dei Goti fino al fatidico anno del 376 dopo cristo, quando un terremoto geopolitico e un uragano militare si abbatterà sulle due confederazioni Gotiche, scombussolandole e gettando i loro rimasugli a cercare rifugio nell'impero dei Romani.

La cultura di Jastorf, espansione fino al primo secolo dopo cristo

La nostra storia inizia con Augusto e il principato: il cambio di regime imperiale pose fine all'espansionismo della Repubblica perché non c'erano più i grandi conquistatori, i signori della guerra della Repubblica come Cesare e Pompeo, in perenne ricerca di gloria militare. Al loro posto si era installato un solido e calcolatore regime imperiale che non vedeva di buon occhio l'emergere di eroi conquistatori. Si parla spesso di Teutoburgo come di battuta di arresto fatale dell'espansionismo imperiale ma la spinta all'espansionismo si era in realtà esaurita da tempo: se i Romani avessero davvero voluto conquistare i Germani lo avrebbero fatto anche dopo Teutoburgo, visto che i Germani del primo secolo dopo cristo non erano assolutamente in grado di fermare i Romani: erano riusciti a vincere tre legioni solo con una imboscata, utilizzando il terreno favorevole e la fiducia dei vertici militari in un principe dei Germani doppiogiochista.

Non è un caso che le armi romane si fermarono infatti sul Reno, frontiera tra due livelli di civiltà molto diversi: al di qua del Reno vivevano i Celti, al di là i Germani. i Celti prima dell'arrivo di Cesare avevano già sviluppato una complessa economia anche a base monetaria, con insediamenti a livello di piccole città che producevano un surplus sufficiente a sostenere una complessa organizzazione sociale. La stessa cultura politica era molto evoluta e complessa: le confederazioni celtiche avevano magistrature e spesso elezioni. Per certi versi i Celti del primo secolo avanti cristo erano al livello di sviluppo raggiunto dalla Repubblica Romana nei primi secoli della sua storia: l'immagine del villaggio di Galli di Asterix è sbagliata perché paradossalmente sottovaluta il livello di sviluppo dei Galli.

Dall'altro lato del Reno c'erano invece i Germani: gli archeologi moderni tendono a non identificare più i popoli basandosi sui nomi affibbiatigli dagli storici antichi ma preferiscono il concetto di cultura, basato sulle evidenze archeologiche. La cosiddetta cultura di Jastorf è quella che gli archeologi utilizzano per descrivere i poveri resti dei primi Germani, che abitavano la penisola dello Jutland e l'attuale Germania settentrionale. Con il tempo questi Germani iniziarono a migrare e assorbire altri gruppi più a sud e a est di cui sappiamo poco o nulla: quello che gli storici antichi ci hanno descritto come solidi popoli germanici erano probabilmente delle popolazioni molto più miste al cui vertice c'erano le famiglie più importanti dei Germani conquistatori.

Nel primo secolo dopo cristo questo processo si poteva dire concluso per una vasta parte della moderna Germania: è con queste popolazioni che si scontreranno le legioni di Cesare e Augusto. Come sostiene Peter Heather la cultura di Jastorf – a differenza dell'Europa celtica – era ad un livello molto più primordiale di sviluppo: l'economia agricola era al livello della mera sussistenza, basandosi su una povera agricoltura pastorale. Non esistevano né la moneta né la scrittura e ancora ai tempi di Augusto i Germani non avevano prodotto insediamenti umani di alcuna rilevanza, nemmeno al livello del villaggio. Il fattore principale che smorzò l'espansionismo Romano fu proprio l'assenza di sistemi politici ed economici da assorbire nell'impero, lo stesso fattore che impedì l'espansione Romana in Scozia, più a nord. Conquistare i Germani era semplicemente improduttivo e uno spreco per l'Impero che avrebbe dovuto spendere risorse preziose per conquistare, occupare e poi sviluppare popoli poverissimi. Inoltre, la stessa natura di popolazione dispersa, priva di centri di potere e senza una classe dominante di proprietari terrieri impediva ai Romani di occupare efficacemente il territorio, conquistandone le città principali e associandone la leadership a Roma, cosa che era il modus operandi standard dell'Impero e aveva fatto miracoli in Gallia. In più i germani, divisi in decine di deboli tribù, non erano assolutamente un pericolo per l'Impero Romano del principato, quindi perché conquistarli? Al primo insuccesso i Romani lasciarono perdere. Quello che bloccò l'espansionismo romano non fu la forza e la bellicosità dei Germani ma, paradossalmente, la loro povertà e debolezza.

Eppure abbiamo appena visto il giudice dei Goti Atanarico, nel quarto secolo dopo cristo, chiedere e ottenere di trattare con l'Imperatore dei Romani da pari a pari: chiaramente qualcosa era accaduto nei tre secoli intercorsi dal principato di Augusto a quello di Valente che aveva cambiato la bilancia dei poteri.

Espansione dei Germani dal primo al terzo secolo dopo cristo

Innanzitutto, va detto che la “Germania” del quarto secolo – ovvero l'area a dominazione di popoli Germanici – si era molto allargata: I Germani erano migrati verso est e avevano conquistato buona parte dei popoli locali. Oramai era a guida Germanica tutta l'Europa compresa tra il Mar Nero e le steppe della Russia a est, il Danubio a sud e il Reno ad ovest. Questo processo non era stato pacifico e buona parte delle guerre e invasioni che sconvolsero l'impero a partire dalle guerre contro Quadi e Marcomanni ai tempi di Marco Aurelio sono state ascritte a questo processo: I germani si fecero largo nelle popolazioni locali, assoggettandone alcune e spingendone altre ad invadere l'impero. Verso la fine del terzo secolo la conquista si era conclusa ma ora, al confine con Roma, al posto delle dozzine di tribù del primo secolo dopo cristo c'erano delle nuove confederazioni di Germani, molto più vaste e potenti, che avevano assorbito le tribù precedenti: Franchi e Alemanni sulla frontiera del Reno, Burgundi, Sassoni e Vandali più a est. Sulla frontiera Danubiana invece insistevano dei popoli chiamati Goti: i Goti Tervingi nella ex provincia romana della Dacia e nelle pianure circostanti, fino al Dnestr, mentre nelle steppe ucraine vivevano i Goti Greutungi. Cosa era accaduto per causare questo formidabile cambiamento?

Quello che era accaduto è che la vicinanza con i Romani aveva finito, inevitabilmente, per cambiare anche i Germani. Quello che dovete capire è che il Limes romano, la frontiera, non era affatto un muro impenetrabile per tenere fuori i barbari ma una frontiera dove si incontravano i popoli del nord e quelli del mediterraneo, commerciando in continuazione. Per la frontiera passavano merci, uomini e idee: e non a caso, visto che i Romani utilizzavano la loro attrattiva commerciale e culturale come metodo per legare a sé i popoli del Barbaricum, il mondo dei Barbari.

L'agricoltura del nordeuropa alla base della crescita del mondo germanico

Alla base della trasformazione del mondo germanico c'era ovviamente l'economia e ancora più specificatamente l'agricoltura: in particolare si era diffusa una nuova agricoltura nordeuropea che utilizzava il concime degli animali per migliorare la resa dei terreni, questo aveva enormemente aumentato il potenziale di produzione cerealicola nordeuropea portando ad un rapido aumento della popolazione, visto che come in ogni epoca questa è legata alla disponibilità di derrate alimentari. Ne abbiamo prova grazie all'archeologia sperimentale che ha trovato tracce in questo periodo di un aumento importante dei pollini da cereali, a spese di quelli di erba e di alberi. I Germani espansero enormemente i campi a coltura, per farlo iniziarono a tagliare le foreste. Grazie all'incrementata disponibilità di produzione cerealicola si moltiplicarono, cosa testimoniata anche dall'aumento delle sepolture a nord del Danubio.

Ma la rivoluzione economica del mondo germanico non si fermò all'agricoltura: gli archeologi hanno anche trovato importanti miniere, in particolare in Polonia, con livelli di produzione che sottintendono una vasta esportazione. Tracce di siti dediti alla metallurgia e alla lavorazione dei metalli si diffondono ovunque. La produzione di ceramica, nel primo secolo rudimentale e casalinga, diventa organizzata in grandi botteghe destinate al commercio. Nel quarto secolo i Germani iniziano perfino a produrre il vetro, un materiale di lusso prodotto dai Romani e che sottintende un buon livello di capacità industriale: gli archeologi all'inizio, posti di fronte all'aumento dei prodotti in vetro in Germania, pensarono che i Germani avessero semplicemente importato più pezzi dai Romani. Negli anni Sessanta però fu scoperta una vera e propria vetreria nella Gothia a nord del Danubio. Anche i gioielli, praticamente assenti ai tempi dei Germani di Teutoburgo, si diffondono nell'Europa settentrionale a partire dal quarto secolo e diventano via via più complessi: sintomo questo anche della stratificazione sociale che accompagna sempre lo sviluppo economico: le civiltà povere sono molto più egalitarie di quelle più ricche. Questo perché ogni nuovo flusso di ricchezza, nella storia, tende a concentrarsi in poche mani.

Una società più stratificata dominata da una classe guerriera

La rivoluzione economica va di pari passo anche con la rivoluzione delle strutture politiche: come detto le risorse tendono ad accumularsi in poche mani, permettendo di assoldare o finanziare l'armamento di un gruppo di soldati professionisti. Il denaro e le spade saranno la base che la famiglia o il clan in questione utilizzerà per accumulare più ricchezze, più armi, più potere: perché con le armi e la violenza si può certamente acquistare il potere su gruppi meno armati.

Da tutto questo esce un quadro di un mondo in profonda transizione: nel quarto secolo i Germani avevano raggiunto e superato il livello di sviluppo dei Celti ai tempi di Giulio Cesare. Per non finire assorbiti dall'Impero avevano imparato a collaborare: vi chiedo uno sforzo di immaginazione, immagino che per voi sia più facile immedesimarsi nei Romani. Ma provate a vedere il mondo dal punto di vista dei Germani: al di là del grande fiume si estende un impero immenso, con capacità tecnologiche superiori e una fonte a quanto pare inesauribile di denaro, uomini e provviste. Si tratta di una minaccia troppo grande per non richiedere di unirsi e collaborare: i Germani non erano stupidi e capirono che l'unica possibilità di sopravvivenza era di unirsi in confederazioni capaci quanto meno di resistere all'ingombrante vicino. Questo non fu però un processo pacifico di confederazione tra tribù ma una riorganizzazione violenta delle strutture politiche che causò decenni se non secoli di caos. La nuova casta di guerrieri e di famiglie importanti impose mano a mano un consolidamento del potere fino a che al confine di Roma non ci furono più dozzine di tribù di poveri contadini male armati ma una manciata di confederazioni germaniche strutturate, ben armate e con una popolazione numerosa di contadini nella quale arruolare, alla bisogna, nuove reclute.
